"Everyone has a touch of the 'tism." I wish. The world would be a much softer, more understanding place if that were true. The more I look back at my life, especially now as a high-masking, undiagnosed autistic adult finishing my Master’s in Psychology (knowing I can’t ethically diagnose myself) the more undeniable the pattern is. I see it in the stories my parents tell: only eating three specific foods as a toddler. How intensely I struggled when my sister was born. The non-stop barrage of questions I had about everything. My deep, consuming need for music. My mother literally putting a safety harness on me so I wouldn't wander off in public, or that time I wandered off at a gas station with my dad just to find a bathroom. I see it in the intense, hyper-specific phobias born from childhood trauma: At 8 years old, watching my great aunt pass away on a covered wagon camping trip, cementing an existential terror of dying alone. At 10, when my mom hit a pothole while four-wheeling to the lake, nearly tipping the Suzuki on the side of a hill. She corrected it and we were physically fine, but I refused to go camping again until I was 16, hello, lifelong fear of heights. At 10, being pulled under in the deep end of a pool when a neighborhood boy climbed onto my shoulders while I was coming up for air. I didn't weigh much, swallowed water, and instantly developed a terror of deep water or anywhere I can't see the bottom. At school, I was always the "weird" kid. I was bullied. Making friends was an uphill battle, so I clung to teachers and retreated into storytelling. Not everyone has a touch of autism. Most people don't walk into a grocery store or restaurant and feel physically assaulted by the fluorescent lights, the noise, and the sheer volume of sensory input. Most people don't feel entirely alienated from their own age group. And most people don't have a nervous system wired like a high-definition radar, instantly clocking the micro-shift in someone's face, their tone, or their energy, spiraling into anxiety while the person smiles and insists, "I'm fine, nothing is wrong." Meanwhile, everything inside you is screaming, Liar. If everyone truly had it, I wouldn't have grown up feeling broken or "weird." The world would be built to accommodate minds like mine instead of punishing us for existing differently. So no. Not everyone has a touch of the 'tism. #ActuallyAutistic #AutismInWomen #latediagnosedautistic #autismawareness
