@profencerstu: Aberfan is a village in South Wales, best known for the Aberfan disaster of 21 October 1966, one of the worst disasters in modern British history. At about 9:15 a.m., a huge spoil tip—waste material from the nearby coal mine—collapsed after becoming saturated with water. The resulting landslide swept down the mountainside and engulfed Pantglas Junior School and nearby houses. 144 people were killed, including 116 children and 28 adults. Most of the children who died were between 7 and 10 years old. The subsequent tribunal concluded that the disaster was preventable and placed responsibility on the National Coal Board. The tip had been built over natural springs, and concerns about water and instability had existed before the collapse. Aberfan became a defining tragedy in modern Welsh and British history, both because of the enormous loss of children and because of the failures that allowed it to happen. Today, the former school site is occupied by the Aberfan Memorial Garden, while many of the victims are buried at Bryntaf Cemetery overlooking the village. #aberfan #tragedy #Wales #remember #anniversary

Michael Melbourne :
So sad that this happened , I was a teenager then it was the first time I remember the TV channels broadcasting extra news bulletins. It could have been prevented if the Coal Board had acted on warnings
