Just because pol pot wasnt some wholesome chungus socialist doesn’t mean he wasn’t one. His reasoning for his actions did have a plan he first wanted to resist imperialism, then restart society completely from the ground up to rid the people of their imperial and capitalist thinking and towards the end and for the future plans he wanted to slowly move people into urban areas again to industrialize under a completely new and never seen before socialist society. Now obviously this goes without saying he did not improve his fellow Cambodians lives and his entire project was thankfully cut short by the Vietnamese. However just because he doesnt follow your desired wholesome socialist society doesnt mean he wasnt a socialist

Pol Pot was not as terrible as people try to portray him. The evacuation of Phnom Penh was an emergency measure caused by the famine and the subsequent epidemic. After the evacuation of Phnom Penh, Pol Pot did not engage in any “de‑urbanization”; moreover, in 1978, a project was developed to reintroduce currency units into the economy, but the Vietnamese invasion interrupted these plans. The Soviet Union deliberately goaded Vietnam into starting an armed conflict with Cambodia, ordering the former to “act the same way the USSR did with Czechoslovakia in 1968.”

small correction: the Communist Party of Vietnam was originally founded with the same name. It was only around 8 months after its foundation that the name was changed to the Indochinese Communist Party as per the third international's request.

In spite of its nuance, I still think Deng was in the moral "wrong" here due to Pol Pot's raids on the Vietnamese border. For someone living there, all they'd known for two decades is conflict, followed by barbaric western attacks, followed by an invasion in the north supporting the Cambodians
