@coachbriggsofficial: Understanding where the gap was and what they would have needed to see is the most important data point for you! Especially if incorrect expectations were set throughout the year!
"you got a 3, that means you met your expectations"
"what would I have needed to do to get a 4?"
"so, upper management doesn't allow us to give out 4s"
🤔😒😡

Except they can only give 1-2 exceeds on their team no matter what and get told they need to spread the rating because most on team exceeds but cant give them all that rating.

Meets some expectations and a 2% merit increase? I now come in 30 minutes late, take 1.5 hours for lunch, and doom scroll when I can. Congratulations, you now get 2% effort.

As long as I get our annual 3% increase, I no longer care if I am not exceptional.

They actually fight the managers trying to give employees better than average. Saying, but that’s their job. When people are helping and doing stuff not in their job description.

Should the expectations for “exceed” be mentioned on the job description?

Guys. The raises are predetermined. Your managers get a pot of money they can give for raises. You were going to get the same raise even if you exceeded expectations.

I quit doing more. I do my job and meet expectations. No more. I get 3% no matter what I do 🤷♂️

My supervisor told me the reason I didn’t get a better score was because this was a new position and they haven’t created all the processes for the role yet. I was thrown in to wing it. I was told I’ve done fantastic, but because leadership hasn’t figured out what they want from me, he couldn’t score me higher. Friday is my last day.

We are told, no one EVER gets 5's. There is always room to grow. Technically telling me or giving me a reason to not try harder. I honestly don't think that is their thought process when completing the evaluation, meaning what exceeding looks like for me this year. It should be.

I tried to give one of my people a 4 last year. They hard declined it above me and sent it back to be put back to a 3.

I get exceeding expectations all the time and still get the same crappy 3% raise

As someone who has to give out reviews I was told I can not give out 5's. I asked why and was told that no one deserves it because no one works that hard. I disagreed because there are a couple people who do way more than is expected of them.

There wasn't an annual review this year. No notice. No discussion. Also, no raise.

I called this out in my 2023 review because the comments literally said exceeds expectations and always goes above and beyond yet scored only a meets so I subsequently reduced my effort to meets expectations quality. My next two reviews ironically have been exceeds (same boss) but my effort will never go back because now it’s just a joke.

I got a 2/4. One of the poorest workers got higher. After, I have stopped do any extra. PERIOD. I am now taking every single break and doing a little less than expected. So, now I am giving them 2/4 work ethic.

I’ve had a leader say “you’re exceeding expectations this year but if you’re doing the same work next year, you may not even be meeting” to which I asked “but if my title, pay, or job description won’t have changed, why would my role requirements be changing”. I get striving to consistently improve, but my mind was blown. This whole performance review is an arbitrary company mandate to withhold merit increases.

I came from the military where anything less than a five was considered fucking horrendous. My first year review with my civilian company, they gave me threes across the board. I told him how I show up two hours early and leave an hour late and never take lunch. I always answer the phone even when I’m not on call and how I go above and beyond for everything. He said no one gets above a three. I now work the way I am rated. I work at about 65% at all times. I get to work on time and I leave at exactly 4 o’clock. 🤷🏻♂️Once they saw me working at 65%, they gave me a $4 an hour pay bump for my outstanding work. The next year I was given $1.67 an hour raise for my awesome 65% effort. Maybe they were offended that I worked so hard and was out shining them? I don’t know. Either way, I make a lot more money by doing a lot less now.

I'm so using this one! last year, I said, "Could you introduce me to someone who is an 'exceeds' so I can request mentorship?" Yep. Silence and it never happened.
