I was quite saddened to see alligators along Loop Road responding to the noise of cars pulling up by coming towards humans, which is not their natural or instinctive response. It likely means they’ve been fed and are now associating humans with food, which is good for neither humans nor alligators. As I was by myself, I thought I would try something I learned in my recent @crocodileresearchcoalition course about how they use operant conditioning methods to change the behavior of such animals. One such method is to introduce something unpleasant, though in no way harmful, for the animal to decrease a behavior, in this case approaching humans hoping for food. The unpleasant thing can be as simple as a loud voice with a mean tone and perhaps some irritating arm waving. So that’s what I did. And was shocked when he almost immediately ducked under water and moved slightly away. Of course I know this won’t override ongoing habituation, but how cool to see it actually work with a wild animal. This will be my new go to with all animals that behave that way even though I fear I may gain something of a reputation in the alligator community! 😂 But just imagine if you could change their behavior, how much better it would be for them! #everythingeverglades #looproad #alligators #operantconditioning #dontfeedthewildlife
