If you look back at WW1 and WW2, the US rode the fence for quite a while before officially taking a side. I don't know if it organized or not? When the end is clear, the US will probably come in riding their white horse and mop things up. In the meantime, I believe they want to escape Russia's wrath until they are weakened enough to not cause serious problems.
