Day Three of ‘25 Days of Triathlon’ is all about nutrition for a Sprint or Olympic triathlon! One of the biggest mistakes new triathletes make? Overcomplicating race day nutrition. Let’s break down the nutrition for before, during and after a race: BEFORE THE RACE: * Eat a normal dinner the night before (nothing new or crazy) * Breakfast 2-3 hours pre-race: carbs + small amount of protein (oatmeal, banana, toast with peanut butter) * Pay attention to hydration but keep it normally in the days leading up DURING THE RACE (Sprint): * Honestly? Optional gel on the bike or beginning of run in T2, but you probably don’t need anything. Your body has enough stored energy for 60-90 minutes of exercise. * 1/2 bottle of water on the bike (12oz) * Continue sipping water and sports mix from aid stations available on the run course DURING THE RACE (Olympic): * 1 energy gel or chew halfway through the bike * 1 bottle of water on the bike (20-24oz) * Water at aid stations on the run * That’s it. AFTER THE RACE: * Real food within 30-60 minutes (sandwich, chocolate milk, recovery meal) Save the complex nutrition strategies for when you’re racing Half or Full Ironman distances. For now, keep it simple and focus on training. Your body is smarter than you think—trust it. So… what about longer races? Once you get into half and full distance racing, that is where the nutrition becomes more critical. But for your first sprint or Olympic? Don’t let the nutrition aisle at the running store overwhelm you. The best fuel is the fuel you’ve practiced with and that doesn’t upset your stomach. Sometimes that’s a $3 gel. Sometimes it’s a banana you brought from home. #triathlon #triathlete #triathlon_world #triathlon_in_the_world #swimbikerun
