Grew up in the 70s and 80s, Autism wasn't really a thing, figured it out about a year and a half ago

I’m stuck somewhere in relief, grief, and overwhelm. With a side of imposter syndrome still creeping in a bit.

I’m 48 and in the middle of the diagnosis process. My parents should theoretically be able to provide input about my neurospicyness in early childhood but unfortunately they are both neurodivergent as f*ck as well and in complete denial that such a thing exists 🫤 My adult children, however, JUMPED at the chance to provide their ‘testimonies’ to the assessor 😂😂

I have told my work recently, even though it was a hard thing to do..I had to do it because I couldn't go on masking no longer as I was exhausted! The last few days I have felt this huge release..as now I feel like I don't have to put on a show all the time!💛

I won’t share with my family my diagnosis because I know I’ll get no support and that will crush me

For me it was,
I am not exeptionaly difficult, I am typical.
And here I am, and now what?
I am about to loose my job.
The solutions I am asking for, are seen as excuses to avoid work.

I feel like it’s too late for me. I am in my mid 50s. My life has been a complete disaster and I always thought I was the problem. I have watched my kids grow up and get diagnosed. I’m worried that if I ever step back and wonder what my life would have been like with a diagnosis , tools , and accommodations that I just might collapse from the weight of grief and regret. One thing they don’t talk often enough about is that neurodivergent women are more likely to be in a abusive relationships.. multiple therapist have talked with me about that .. I don’t know who I am anymore. And I don’t have the support my life. I’m just out here trying to rebuild and figure it out one day at a time

I went it my first job after getting my masters degree in social work. I vowed to not mask because I figured this was a safe space. Oh how wrong I was. Management actually requires supervisors take Dale Carnige classes. Myself and the other therapists were continually gaslit and when we brought up concerns we were told “we hear you” and then nothing changed or like me were terminated. This was a private practice who saw county mental health clients. 16 people have quit of been fired in last 4 months

Once I unmasked I find it really hard to mask anymore and that’s an issue for me.

My people already expect the unexpected with me and I'm fortunate enough to have a solid support system. I thought I was masking quite effectively until people started calling me out on things. Now I just accept that I am who I am and the majority of the time I don't make sense to normies and I'm ok with that. Just be yourself and love who you are [Heartwarming]

An ex of min was against me seeking an Autism diagnosis.
I have one scheduled and my journey has been supported by my amazing wife.
it took me a while to rationalize that my ex was protecting herself because she felt ashamed of being with someone who could be certified autistic.

I have been told that it is just an excuse.
N/m that for decades I have said that I was tired, that I struggled with certain things, etc.
"Nah, It is just some trauma. You can work through it."
"Nah, you're a bit odd, but you're too smart and competent to be autistic."
The truth is that by unmasking and building accommodations we also start observing boundaries, which other people have gotten used to stepping on

when I was watching someone else's experiences of their life thru an AuDHD lens and drew all the same similarities he did I broke down and sobbed uncontrollably. I finally had found that missing piece(which in my case was the autism)after already having the ADHD diagnosis for many years at that point but still felt like something was missing

I lost/ended a friendship of 19 years over this. She said that she was tired of me “glancing over social cues” rather than supporting (enabling) her at my own expense. She told another close friend that she’d lost trust in me and that our “friendship has really suffered since she’s been unmasking.” I cut my losses

Unmasking feels like such a waste. I get to feel more comfortable in my skin, but everything that has mattered to me is going to burn away or disappear. Burnout feels safer. At least I know what to expect from that.

I suspect that my mom is autistic and she has spent her life trying to use drugs and alcohol to cope because she’s not really able to mask enough to get along. I think she gets tired of people being angry with her because she’s always being inadvertently rude. 🥺
