I did a test to analyze the effectiveness of this method with red oak acorns. I removed 37 acorns with visible weevils and 50 acorns with no visible problems and ran them each through the float test as separate groups. 2/37 of the weevil acorns sank (false negative), and 8/50 of the good acorns floated, but 5 of those were actually bad inside, though I couldn’t visually tell, so only 3 were false positives. Next, I ran a larger amount of unseparated acorns, 1000 to be exact (yes, I counted) through the float test of those 137 floated. I went through all the floaters and found 78 that were bad and 59 that were good, which seems like a lot to lose, but out of a harvest of 1000, losing a meager 5.9% is not a big concern. I share them with my local wildlife anyway. Using this high-efficiency tool to remove weevil acorns ensures that I have fewer weevils that end up scattered around my home and that I’m less likely to come across bad acorns while cracking! Plus, the float test washes acorns, which I like to do anyway (especially if harvested from a dusty/muddy area), and removes bits of sticks, caps, and other debris. Just remember that with different harvest conditions, results can vary, so I would recommend the separation method I did at the beginning to test the float test. The float test is the tool that allows me to process as many acorns as I do every year. Without it, I simply wouldn’t have enough time to sort (and winnow) everything by hand and waste precious drying space on acorns that have been or are being devoured by acorn weevils.
