The word intifada comes from Arabic meaning an uprising or a shaking off. It does not inherently mean violence. At its core, it describes resistance to oppression, and that resistance can be political, social, cultural, psychological or physical. An intifada can involve civil disobedience, protests, strikes, boycotts, cultural expression and the refusal to accept a system of domination as normal or legitimate. It can also describe a psychological process: resisting the internalisation of oppression, rejecting the idea that subjugation is inevitable, and reclaiming a sense of dignity, agency and collective identity. So let’s globalise the intifada!
