Take it at 62, every time. No one is promised tomorrow.

He’s forgetting you have to live on that money. Can you actually retire on 1,800 a month? That’s the only question that actually matters in this conversation.

Health, other retirement income, taxes, and actual retirement age all need to be part of the considerations. It’s not one size for everyone.

My dad died at 60, and my mom at 76. Dad didn’t get his social security, and mom was too sick for the last 8 years of her life to enjoy anything. I’m taking it when I can and enjoying the hell out of my life.

Hey Tik Tok :
My father, who is alive is 97 and mom recently passed at 94. 82 might not be the best age

The catch with “early retirement age” (before 67) is that you cannot have more than ~$25k-$30k for other income. If you do, then your benefit is reduced $1 for every $2 you earn over the max. So if you still have a $100k job, taking early retirement means quitting your job and going from $5k/mo to $1800/mo for your income.

That’s assuming you don’t work. I bring home $8,000 after taxes (I am 62). I plan to work till I’m 70 since I live my job and I’m healthy. Why would I go from $8000 to $1800?

lets also not forget you can invest that money you starting taking out at 62 and the interest earned would be an opportunity cost of waiting.

This is such horrible advice. This is math done in a box. You didn’t factor in life expenses, cost of living adjustments, married or single… run your own math

Nobody EVER counts the earnings you'd have if you continue working until full retirement age. It massively eclipses the SS payments and needs to factor into the decision. The goal isn't necessarily to extract every possible cent from SS, but to live comfortably.

I took mine at 62 - no guarantee if I’ll be alive at 70. Or that SS will be there either.

I hear this and I understand it. But I also know that most people can’t retire at 62 because they can’t live on the lower amount. That is the case with most older people we know. They can’t live on their smaller amounts

You didn't say anything about the income cap by retiring at 62 if you still work.

...if you don't need the money and you invest that every month you will be miles ahead of 67 or 70

post 82 you would be getting diminishing returns, so the real question is how long do you think you are going to live? if you don't make it to 82 you came out ahead but if you live until 90 you came out behind.

Money now is often worth significantly more than money later. Either because you’re more healthy and can enjoy it or because you invest it and let it grow.
