@dustycalendar: On this day in 1959, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened its doors on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Its architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was not there. He had passed away six months earlier at the age of 91, after working on the building for 16 years. The project started in 1943, when the art collector Solomon Guggenheim asked Wright to design a home for his collection of modern art. Wright went through about 700 sketches and six sets of working drawings. He imagined something that did not look like a museum at all, a white spiral that rises like a coil. Visitors would take an elevator to the top and then walk slowly down one long, gently sloping ramp, looking at art along the way. Not everyone loved the idea. In 1958, a group of 21 artists, including Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell, signed a letter of protest. They feared the curved walls and sloping floors would overpower the paintings instead of showing them off. Some critics said the building was more about Wright than about art. When it finally opened, huge crowds came to see it, and the debate has never fully stopped. But over time, the museum became one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. In 2019, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of a group of Wright's most important works. A building that artists once feared would swallow their work now draws millions of people to walk the spiral he never got to see.
