Zheng He · Seventh treasure voyage · 19 January 1431 – 22 July 1433 The voyages had been cancelled in 1424. The Xuande Emperor, Yongle's grandson, restored them once: in 1430 he complained that the distant countries had stopped sending tribute, and ordered Zheng He out again. It was the last time. The fleet left Longwan, the anchorage below Nanjing, on 19 January 1431, with 27,550 men by Zhu Yunming's count. It then lay at Changle on the Min for 11 months waiting on the wind and on the season — and while it lay there, 2 stone tablets were cut, one at Changle and one at Liujiagang, listing the countries the voyages had reached and what they had done there. They are the closest thing to a first-hand statement of purpose the treasure fleets left, and both survive. An anonymous log, the Xia Xiyang, records this voyage day by day, which makes it the best dated of the seven. Out of the Min on 12 January 1432; Champa on the 27th; the Java coast on 7 March; up the Musi to Palembang on 24 July; Malacca on 3 August; Samudera on 12 September; Ceylon on 28 November; Calicut on 10 December; Hormuz on 17 January 1433. From Calicut a detachment did something none of the earlier voyages had. 7 men of the Chinese company took passage in a ship of that port bound for Tianfang — the country of heaven, Mecca. They went to Jeddah and inland to the holy city, bought giraffes, lions and ostriches, brought back a drawing of the Kaaba, and returned with an envoy of the Sharif of Mecca who went on to the Ming court. Zheng He, a Muslim by birth whose father and grandfather had both made the pilgrimage, never got there himself. He died at Calicut in the spring of 1433, aged 62, and was buried at sea; the tomb outside Nanjing that carries his name holds his clothes. The fleet came home under his deputy Wang Jinghong, reaching Liujiagang on 7 July 1433 and Nanjing on the 22nd. After that, nothing. The court had turned against the cost; the shipyards stopped building; the ships rotted at their moorings, and within a lifetime an official was reported to have destroyed the sailing directions themselves rather than let anyone propose another voyage. When the Portuguese reached Calicut 65 years later, in 4 small ships, the harbour had not seen a Chinese fleet in living memory. Why it matters: not because China "could have discovered" anything — the ocean it sailed was already the busiest in the world and every port on it knew the way home. It matters because a state at the height of its power built the largest fleets on earth, sent them out seven times, and then decided it would rather not, and stuck to it. #ZhengHe #TreasureFleet #MingDynasty #history #maps
