They may complain when we correct them, set boundaries, refuse to give them everything they want, or make difficult decisions. They may not see the sacrifices, effort, protection, guidance and opportunities we provide behind the scenes. Unfortunately, absence can sometimes reveal a person's value more clearly than presence does. A parent may not be fully appreciated until their children grow up. A hardworking partner may not be valued until their support is missing. A farmer may be taken for granted while everyone enjoys the harvest. A loyal friend may seem ordinary until that friendship is no longer available. The lesson is not to live seeking appreciation or to deliberately disappear so that people miss you. Instead, keep doing what is right even when your efforts are not immediately recognized. Your value does not become smaller simply because someone fails to notice it. At the same time, we should learn to appreciate the people who contribute to our lives while they are still with us. Say thank you. Give credit. Respect their effort.
