@fixingpain: Lats with Summer Bronco today. We'd already worked her neck and rhomboids seated, so we stayed seated to keep the session flowing. Why seated? It gives me the most stretch to work with. Summer reaches her arm all the way overhead, which lengthens the lat from where it attaches on the front of the upper arm (the bicipital groove of the humerus) down to the ribs, spine, and thoracolumbar fascia. A muscle under stretch shows you exactly where it's holding tension. The first few passes go straight up and down to warm the tissue and find the tight lines. As I move lower into the belly of the muscle, she twists away and leans away. That takes the stretch all the way down into the thoracolumbar fascia, so I can reach the lower fibers that usually get missed. Why it matters: the lat pulls the arm down and rotates it inward. When it's tight, it can drag the shoulder forward and limit overhead reach. For a Muay Thai fighter who throws and clinches all day, that's a big deal. Freeing up the lat is one of the most overlooked fixes for a lot of shoulder problems. You can also do this side-lying, prone, or supine, but seated gives you the best stretch.
