@brighteyes847: Metis HISTORY -COOKING WITH BRIGHT EYES In Honor of Women's History Month. I added some color to my Coloring Sheet. Celebrating Marguerite Caron (née Dumas) for Women's History Month. For Women's History Month, we honor the indispensable, yet often overlooked, roles that women played on the front lines of historical conflicts. A premier example of this courage is Métis matriarch Marguerite Caron (née Dumas) (1842–1937). During the Battle of Fish Creek (April 24, 1885), Marguerite’s immediate family—including her husband, Jean Caron Sr., and their sons—were pinned down by heavy Canadian militia fire. Recognizing the imminent danger, she rushed to the headquarters of Métis leader Louis Riel. When Riel urged her to stay back and pray, Marguerite famously delivered an ultimatum: send reinforcements immediately, or she would march to the front lines and take up arms herself. Her fierce resolve forced a change in military tactics, securing the necessary backup that saved the Métis forces from immediate defeat. Following the Northwest Resistance, Marguerite faced decades of economic hardship as a widow, yet she successfully maintained her family homestead. Her enduring legacy as a "Mother of Our Nation" exemplifies the spirit, tactical intelligence, and fierce resilience of Métis women who anchored their communities through wartime and reconstruction alike.
