Gold makes a higher high, but Silver fails to do the same. What does that actually tell us? This is one of the ideas behind SMT divergence, a concept used in ICT and Smart Money Concepts (SMC) trading to identify disagreement between related markets. Rather than looking at one chart in isolation, SMT divergence involves comparing price movements across two instruments that generally have a meaningful relationship. Gold (XAUUSD) and Silver (XAGUSD) are one example. Although they often move in the same general direction, they don't always make matching highs and lows. And those differences can provide useful information when analysing price action. Here's how it works. BEARISH SMT DIVERGENCE Imagine Gold moves above a previous swing high, creating a higher high. At the same time, Silver fails to break its corresponding previous high. One market has made a new high, while the other hasn't confirmed that move. Within ICT-style analysis, traders may interpret this as bearish SMT divergence. It can raise questions about the strength of the move higher, particularly when it occurs around an important liquidity level or higher-timeframe area of interest. But it doesn't automatically mean price is about to reverse. BULLISH SMT DIVERGENCE The opposite can happen around market lows. Imagine Gold moves below a previous swing low, creating a lower low, while Silver fails to make a corresponding lower low. This disagreement may be interpreted as bullish SMT divergence. Again, the divergence itself isn't proof that the market will reverse higher. It's simply another piece of information. WHY LOCATION MATTERS One of the most important things to consider when identifying SMT divergence is where it develops. For example, a bearish divergence occurring around a higher-timeframe fair value gap (HTF FVG) may be more relevant to your analysis than an isolated divergence with no clear market context. Traders may also pay attention to whether price has swept external liquidity, whether the wider market structure supports the idea and how price reacts after the divergence forms. The key is understanding the relationship between these different pieces of information. NOT EVERY DIFFERENCE IS SMT Gold and Silver aren't perfectly correlated. They can behave differently for reasons that have nothing to do with an upcoming reversal. That's why it's important to compare corresponding swing points on comparable timeframes rather than treating every small difference between the charts as a meaningful signal. And even when a valid SMT divergence appears, it doesn't establish that the setup has a profitable edge. You still need to consider market structure, entry conditions, invalidation and risk management. The main takeaway is that SMT divergence can help you identify potential relative strength or weakness between markets. It's a tool for building a trading hypothesis, not predicting the future with certainty.
