The gender question depends though. If a specific gender has traumatised the client, it’s probably best not to have therapy with that gender if the trauma is unresolved. That said, clients usually choose a therapist themselves where I live.

Gender can be important for a cliënt, but it doesn't have to be. If it's a huge reason to feel anxious or dissociate, it can be helpful to ask for the other gender.

The one qualifier I would make for that and maybe this is just my bias. I as a male therapist unless under extraordinary circumstances will not be a therapist for teenage girls. It is my belief that these emerging young women would do best working with a female therapist and similarly I do believe that teenage boys will do better working with a male therapist because so much is going on at that time regarding social role and identity, formation, and consolidation. Consistently, I’ve heard those young people say the same thing about their preferences.

I wouldnt have ever thought about it before i had male therapist but I have found although it doesn't it doesn't matter to be which gender a therapist is , I actually have felt like the Male Therapist i have had are a bit easier to speak with and are less judgemental.

I have PTSD bipolar anxiety. I could tell you right now as a man who is almost 50 years old. I much rather prefer women every time I’ve got a male therapist. They always resort to football or some kind of machoism. They’re not really empathetic as much as women and I’ve had at least 20 Therapist either they are bad or I lost them because of insurance reasons
