@abbeyheffer: What is going on in France 🇫🇷 is all too relevant to what we've seen happening across far too many otherwise democratic regimes worldwide. Political science research can help us understand what we're seeing and why we're seeing it. #politicalscience #educationalvideo #academiatiktok

Here in the US, the right has completely made the French protest about immigration. This is such a great analysis. Thank you.

Non-violent protest *helps.* It only "works" by itself if a regime was already open to the option. If the regime's hard line is before the demands, Non-violence will only go so far without a vanguard.

historically, do non-vio protests work if they aren't also associated with some economic pressure?

I genuinely want to engage in this post for two reasons, one to help the algorithm to help you find a larger audience to boost your analytics but also number two. can you point out specifically what non-violent protests accomplished the goals they set out for? I can't think of any and I've participated in all of them over the last 25 to 35 years

I suspect that if you wanted to make protesting harder and convince the general public that protesters are dangerous, you'd make protests look threatening or violent. I have been in organizing circles for ages now and infiltration can look like a sudden outburst of disorganized violence and conflict.

Totally agree. It's not one thing or the other that's driving this dissent and open revolt. It's a combination of various mitigating factors some simple, others, wholly complex and not able to be solved quickly or easily. Democracy? Huh, it's kinda funny how it works. Even funnier is how the politicians try to spin the rationale or reasons behind them. Again, thanks for sharing your pov on the whys, wherefores and your recommendations on books for reading. Love your work!!!. 😁✌️😎

could you provide some more context on non-violent protest "working", beyond reasons why people are more ready to participate in it? i.e., in terms of how likely it is to achieve its goals? Because I think that's a really important debate to have - which forms of protest do actually lead to systemic change - when such a large proportion of the public conversation is purely about protest optics

In Australia they even cracked down on protsst against disbility cuts! I am part of the leadership of a national movement and we have been facing very out of proportion police intimidation and violence. Against people in wheelchairs.. ghe government wants that money for nuclear submarines instead

Fantastic analysis. This explains a lot of things. I've always wondered what makes Western regimes ignore the genocide that is going on in Gaza. Thank you.

We should rename the Cost of Living Crisis to what it is; A Cost of (Other People's) Greed Crisis. It might focus minds on who the real problems lie with?
