@bufbiwh719: I loved this story, so I made an interactive version on Cycle AI where you can step into any character and live it yourself!
I spent most of my life being told what was safe. Which university. Which friends. Which plans required my father's approval. A motorcycle definitely hadn't made the approved list.
Harry held out a helmet anyway.
He was my brother's friend, the man who'd brought my jewelry company to England to design a royal crown. He was also the reason I'd learned not to confuse an invitation with a promise.
I should have requested a car.
Instead, I let him fasten the strap under my chin. Such an ordinary touch. My heart behaved as though he'd proposed.
On the bike, he moved my hands around his waist. I blamed the speed for holding on. Then I blamed the corners. Eventually, I ran out of road-related excuses.
Dinner wasn't expensive or private. We sat among people eating from crowded tables. He put food on my plate. I gave him a bite from mine. Nobody asked who my father was.
For once, I wasn't performing the part of the perfect daughter or the woman running a new company. I was hungry. I was laughing. I wanted the evening to last.
That frightened me more than the motorcycle.
Later, he mentioned visiting his family. I said I'd love to. Too quickly? Probably. I tried to recover by asking about meeting Prince Philip.
Harry asked if I liked the prince.
I barely knew anything about the prince. The problem was the man sitting close enough for his arm to warm mine.
The following day, my assistant practically screamed down the phone: the prince had been spotted on a date at the night market.
I'd been there. How had I missed him?
At dinner, I watched Harry enter beside the king. A princess accompanied him. People spoke his royal name.
The helmet. The shared food. The hill. All those chances to tell me.
I didn't suddenly want him because he was a prince. I wanted to go back to the hour when he was just Harry, and I hadn't felt foolish for being happy.
Then someone whispered that the princess might marry him.
I reached for my glass, determined not to stare.
He'd finally given me a night I wanted to remember. Now I had to wonder what it had meant to him.
