I want to talk today about the polychromy of this sculpture, because it changed completely while I was working on it. My original idea was much more classical: a richer palette, more colour, patterned fabrics, and a more elaborate decorative finish. I started with the skin, using the tones I normally work with: a very cool base, with the lights slightly defined, ready to be warmed later with translucent tones. But then something unexpected happened. The rest of the sculpture still had a warm base, and when I saw the piece in the studio like that, the contrast between that cool, almost unfinished skin and the warm body of the sculpture immediately caught my attention. It was not the contrast I had planned, but it was much more interesting. So instead of correcting it or continuing toward the original idea, I decided to keep it. From that moment on, the entire polychromy was built around preserving that unexpected tension between cold and warm. I simplified everything else, working mainly with oxidized effects, keeping that small area of skin, and adding subtle rust-like marks to unify the whole surface without losing the contrast that had appeared almost by accident. This is one of the things I value most in the studio. You begin with a clear plan, but sometimes the work shows you something better halfway through. Being able to recognize that moment, and change direction, can completely transform a piece. @tomasbarcelocastela #TomasBarcelo #Sculpture #ContemporarySculpture #PolychromeSculpture #SculpturePainting #SculptureArt #FigurativeSculpture #FigurativeArt #ContemporaryArt #ArtProcess #CreativeProcess #ArtistStudio #StudioPractice #Polychromy #Patina #OxidizedArt #RustEffect #SurfaceTreatment #ColorContrast #WarmAndCool #ColorInArt #SculptureDetails #ArtDetails #MixedMediaArt #FineArt #VisualArt #Sculptor #ArtInspiration
