I love this story SO much! The godmother of AI (who made modern AI possible) used to run a dry cleaning shop. Fei-Fei Li came to New Jersey from Beijing as a teenager. She barely spoke English. Her parents opened a dry cleaner in Parsippany. She was the only one in the family who spoke English, so the business became hers to run. Phones. Billing. Inspections. Customers. She kept running it on weekends while she studied PHYSICS at Princeton. She was still managing it remotely partway through her PhD at Caltech. ✊🏼 In 2007 she built ImageNet, a labeled set of 14 million images. Nearly every deep learning breakthrough since was built on it. Three things stay with me: 1/ The work you take to pay the bills teaches you something no degree covers. She credits hers with teaching her resilience. 2/ Nobody handed her permission to enter the field. She built the thing the field needed. 3/ Where you start has nothing to do with where you finish. I spent nearly 3 decades in financial services. No computer science degree. No technical background. Today I teach AI for a living, and I have taught it to over a million people.
