luffy gets serious often actually. serious about saving his friends. freeing his friends. each arc has him being serious whether its about the fact that his friends dont have food to eat while people in power waste it or about discrimination and slavery etc.

Him getting serious WAS the time skip, keep in mind. Luffy is the captain if he had asked the crew to wait 5 even 10 years his crew would’ve honored that, but he knew what it would take for him to know that he was ready

I would think that he had a little bit of trouble before sabayotti with moria that took the entire crew and then Luffy had to get such a big power up that it almost killed Zorro when nothing happened Luffy had the power of 300 strong fighters and their skills and they still had to get the whole crew in order to win
