I know it’s in our maps, I know Siri is technically an AI, I know AI has existed since way before the 1990’s. I know AI has arguably good uses in medicine. But none of that addresses or changes what I said. I said I am anti Gen AI. A three word summary of a very nuanced topic. Three words to say that the general population shouldn’t have and doesn’t need access to generative AI, that people shouldn’t use it for silly trends and to replace Google, libraries, or friends and therapists. That it has no place in the justice system because it can only learn from existing data which has human biases like racism baked into it. That using it for surveillance and giving it the tools to do that in a world run by neo-liberal capitalists is a recipe for disaster. That it has no place in military operations, as seen by the bombing of the school in Lebanon. That it shouldn’t be used to “predict” crime, which will inevitably target minorities and disenfranchised people. And because legality does NOT equal morality. That it shouldn’t even be used for good use cases until we have a more sustainable method of maintaining it that doesn’t kill the planet and use up all our drinking water. None of that is changed by the fact that it has existed since the 1960’s, or that some AI has some good uses, or that if people just used it for the right things, it could be a good tool to make positive change. The reality is that our society is not built to withstand AI and what people will do with it. And nor are we as every day people individually. Until we live in a society not driven by profit, exploitation, and imprelialism, Generative AI will only cause harm.
