Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff has spent weeks discussing institutional reform, student safety and rebuilding trust. Now Jane Doe has something to say about that trust. In a letter sent to Cornell faculty leaders, she described learning about a conversation between Kotlikoff and her sorority president in January 2025. According to Jane Doe, she was told Kotlikoff questioned why she had waited to report her alleged sexual assault. She said the remark left her feeling “unsupported and disbelieved.” Cornell disputes that account. The university says Kotlikoff was questioning why BYSTANDERS hadn’t used its anonymous tip line, not why Jane Doe waited to come forward. And says a documented firsthand account supports its explanation. OKAY. THEN LET’S EXAMINE THAT ACCOUNT. Who documented the conversation? When? What exactly was said? Because the distinction matters enormously. Questioning why witnesses failed to report is one thing. Questioning why someone who alleges sexual assault didn’t report sooner is something else entirely. And Jane Doe says the version relayed to her damaged her confidence in the administration. Here’s another uncomfortable detail. Kotlikoff previously acknowledged knowing about the allegations in 2024 but not personally following up with her. He also said he didn’t know she’d left Cornell until the lawsuit became public. Now faculty members are considering whether they still have confidence in his leadership. Jane Doe’s letter places her experience directly before them. THIS ISN’T A PUBLIC RELATIONS DISAGREEMENT OVER WORDING. It’s a dispute about what a university president said, what was communicated to a student and how leadership responded to an extraordinarily serious allegation. The seven defendants deny wrongdoing. No criminal charges have been filed. But Cornell’s leadership response is a separate question. IF THE UNIVERSITY HAS RECORDS THAT CLARIFY WHAT HAPPENED, LET’S SEE WHAT CAN BE DISCLOSED WITHOUT COMPROMISING PRIVACY. Because rebuilding trust requires more than telling people they’ve misunderstood you.
