@rainygayle: 💜 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS: WHEN THE MESSAGE SOUNDS INNOCENT 💜 Imagine your past abuser sends a message to your adult children. "I just want to see you and talk. I deserve that much. I'm your father." To the outside world, it might sound innocent. A father wanting to see his children. A man asking for a conversation. Someone who simply wants another chance. Nothing threatening, right? But what if those adult children live with you? What if the person sending that message is the same person you spent years surviving? What if you know the history that nobody else sees? Suddenly, those words don't feel so innocent anymore. Because you aren't just reading a message. You're remembering the history behind it. You're wondering what comes next. You're worrying about whether your home, your peace, and the safety you've worked so hard to rebuild are about to be disrupted. And the person who sent it doesn't even have to contact you directly for that fear to surface. THAT'S THE PART PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT SURVIVING ABUSE. These are messages and feelings you can't take to police department either, unless you have an order of protection. Not many of us have that. This behavior can go on the lifetime of your children and can be dangerous and very threatening but nothing can be done until its too late. Sometimes, the message isn't directed at you, but its impact reaches you anyway. Sometimes, the words sound harmless because the person reading them has never experienced what you experienced. Sometimes, you try to explain why something frightens you, only to hear: "He's just asking to see his kids." "What's threatening about that?" "He's their father." And maybe, to someone without the history, it really does sound like an ordinary message. But they don't know what happened behind closed doors. They don't know the patterns you learned to recognize. They don't know what it cost you to leave, to rebuild, or to finally feel safe again. And they don't understand that when you've lived through abuse, contact involving the person who hurt you can bring back fear, even when the words themselves contain no explicit threat. THEY READ THE MESSAGE. YOU REMEMBER THE HISTORY. This is why domestic violence cannot always be understood by looking at a single text message. Context matters. History matters. Patterns of behavior matter. And so does the impact on the survivor. A message doesn't have to contain an obvious threat for a survivor to feel afraid. At the same time, that fear alone doesn't establish the sender's intentions or determine whether a legal threat has been made. But here's what everyone needs to understand: You don't have to understand a survivor's fear to treat it with compassion. You don't have to agree with their interpretation to listen without dismissing them. And you certainly don't have to tell a survivor that something is harmless simply because it wouldn't frighten you. Because you weren't there. You didn't live through what they lived through. You don't carry their memories. AND YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHAT THEIR HISTORY MEANS TO THEM. 💜 To every survivor who has ever felt afraid of something that looked completely harmless to everyone else: You deserve to be heard. Your safety concerns deserve to be taken seriously, and you deserve support without having to prove your fear to everyone in the room. #DomesticViolenceAwareness #CoerciveControl #SurvivorVoices #PsychologicalAbuse #DomesticViolenceSurvivor
