It's been a while since the last proper update. Recovery from brain surgery has been frustratingly slow. I'm super sensitive to light and noise, even just simple conversation I'm not even involved in sometimes. My speech, reading and writing are still affected, particularly when I'm tired. I'm probably close to the best they're going to get and I just have to accept there's permanent damage. Reducing my fatigue is the best thing that could help me now. Unfortunately, the last few months haven't been straightforward. I ended up back in hospital with a total of four serious ear infections, both ears twice, which meant a couple of trip to ED, another hospital stay, more medication and even a few weeks on IV antibiotics. I've also dealt with pancreatitis and a few other infections along the way. Apparently cancer and brain surgery weren't keeping me busy enough. On the cancer side, I've continued treatment and although it's caused some pretty rough skin issues and infections, according to my latest scans it has kept the cancer at bay. One of the biggest goals has been getting off steroids. After months of taking them daily to keep the brain swelling down, including doses as high as 16mg/day, I'm finally down to just 0.5mg. I'm also still taking a small pharmacy worth of anti-seizure medication. Thankfully, I haven't had another major seizure, and we're hoping to start reducing some of those medications in November. One positive change has been getting some support through the NDIS. I now have a support worker one day a week, and we'll be increasing that gradually. It's already started taking some of the pressure off Lisa. It's an understatement to say she's had to take on far too much over the last year and, to be honest, she still does more for me than anyone should have to. It's now been more than four years since I was diagnosed with Stage IV bowel cancer at 31. Since then, it's spread to my liver, lungs and brain, and somehow I'm still here plugging away. Thank you to everyone who continues to check in, send messages and support Lisa and me. I still can't always reply, but I do read and appreciate them.
