it is nothing like college. or trade school. it is more akin to APPRENTICESHIPS like plumbers or electricians - Where they get paid on the job training.

they act like it’s a regular job where ANYONE can be brought into the industry… it’s also a choice to want to be an apprentice/ tattoo artist, no one’s tying you down and forcing you to do the work. i hate when people trip out about CLEANING😂😂 you should be doing it for the love of the game.. not expecting to be paid and be taught everything at the same time. they don’t know the real weight of it all

If you go apprentice in any trade - you get paid regardless if it's truck driving, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, elevator repair, etc. Internships in college are paid through work study. Tattooing is the only industry that thinks people should work for free

seeing complaints around the “janitor work” is a little wild to me. when you graduate from your apprenticeship, you’re still going to clean the shop if you care about how it’s taken care of. doing cleaning vs getting hazed are different things, but to each their own 🤷🏻♀️

I 100% agree apprentices shouldn’t get paid, but this ideology that every apprentice has to struggle and be put through hell to become a “good” artist is ridiculous. My mentors made my apprenticeship fun. I cleaned and did all the not-so-fun stuff, but they wanted me to be excited to come to work and learn. Tattooing is such a fun industry, and I hate that people make it miserable when it doesn’t have to be!

Why would I want to pay someone to teach them their career? They can get paid when they start charging, but I’m not paying to teach someone. I will buy them lunch on occasion when I have extra money.

all for "earning your strips" type of deal but hazing nah. theres a certain level of muscle memory to setting up and cleaning that will benefit you later on but being your mentors personal assistant should not be a requirement. as for not getting paid, I get it not getting paid to learn is understandable, once you start on skin you start earning, that being said though apprentices also need to be able to eat too so either another job or they need to be getting a wage from the shop if they are required to attend as such. There are plenty to learn from old heads but the nice part of this industry is there is room to learn from the past and make changes for the better while still honoring where it came from.

nah bc my AWARD WINNING artist lets her apprentices make money because guess what.... we all need an income even people learning. that whole they need to struggle because I did mentality is really killing the industry

If they are doing other tasks in the shop then it’s also a job to be paid for. Shouldn’t be paid a lot but they should still be compensated for their time and effort for doing the tasks you don’t want to do

I genuinely don’t understand this mindset beyond “it happened to me so it should happen to everyone else.” People need money to live. ANY other trade pays their apprentices. Not well, but something. Sure someone getting a college education or going to a tech school is paying to be there, but they aren’t doing active labor for the school or their professors. And guess what, if they’re do, they’re PAID

I also feel like if you have consistent money from your shop as an apprentice for learning, then getting thrown to the wolves when you're paying rent/percentage as an artist and you hit slow season or don't have clients because you're new, is setting them up for failure and disappointment once they realize they won't have money all the time. Then the artist quits bc it doesn't pay, and then the shop owner wasted time AND money on someone who didn't really want it.

are we supposed to pay college students to go to class? wtf are they talking about?! the artists don't even get paid unless we do tattoos, we don't get paid to clean the shop and answer phones. smh 🙄

I believe they should get a % of the tattoos that they do. They shouldn’t not be getting anything for tattoo work, I got 30% of what I brought in. It was fair and it worked for both me and my mentor. I didn’t start to get that 30% for a few months however.

I’m with most of this, but paying for your apprenticeship seems kind of digging to me. I’ve had homies apprentice for well over a year before they even touched a machine, they didn’t pay, but also didn’t get paid, but they learned the right way and have respect for what they do and who they are, and the craft. I feel you, but if dudes are asking for 20k from someone working hard, imo that’s crazy. What do you think about that aspect of it?
