@ayuswellness: You're cutting off the mould and eating the rest. That's the mistake. What you see isn't the whole organism. It's just the fruiting body. Underneath, a network called mycelium spreads invisibly through the food. Like a root system, far beyond where you can see. And it produces mycotoxins. Toxic compounds that don't disappear when you cut off the fuzzy bit. Some are known carcinogens. Others damage your kidneys. The more porous the food, the deeper those roots travel. So bread, soft fruit and jam are the worst places to cut around it. But the worst food of all is nuts, especially peanuts. They're prone to aflatoxin. One of the most potent liver carcinogens known. Officially rated Group 1 by the WHO's cancer agency. So if you spot even a speck of mould in a jar of peanut butter, the whole jar goes in the bin. No scraping. No scooping around it. Share this with whoever just said "it's fine, I'll cut it off."

Peanut butter doesn’t go mouldy cause there’s virtually no water in it

One piece of advice—Don't leave food debris like crumbs in jars of peanut butter or jam because that's what causes the mould.

Honestly, my grandparents never wasted any food, mould or no mould. They would just wash it, cut the bad parts off, and eat it. They lived a very, very long time, and no cancer or anything was ever detected in their bodies. One could say that back in the day, food wasn’t poisonous and had no chemicals involved, but they arguably did eat modern food later on and did the exact same thing! 😂😂

not true about jam or any other high sugar product, bacteria doesn't do well in high sugar environments, it's the crumbs from the food mold grows on, don't double dip

So why did it never do me any harm. Possibly with nuts, but not with bread, veg or fruit. Most of those moulds are if anything beneficial. Please tell us your sources? This is nonsense. What about cheeses which rely on mould for their flavour? Have you ever heard of penicillin?
