@avelanhealth: Many older adults assume they make too much to qualify for food assistance and never apply. But once you turn 60, SNAP uses special rules that can make it easier to qualify than people expect. Households with an elderly or disabled member usually only have to meet the net income test, not the stricter gross income test most other households face. Your home is never counted as a resource. Unreimbursed medical expenses over $35 a month can be deducted from your income, and the usual cap on shelter deductions does not apply, so high rent or housing costs can work in your favor instead of against you. Rules vary some by state, so the best way to know for sure is to ask. If groceries have been stretching your budget, it may be worth a quick call to your state SNAP office to see where you stand. 📌 Save this for reference. 🔔 Follow @avelanhealth for simple Medicare and retirement education. ‼️ General education only. we are on snap and are seniors 67 & 68. We receive $25 a month which helps but not nearly enough for cost of food. We are broke at the end of each month. The extra health care is a godsend though as spouse has stage 4 cancer
