My parents forced me to open my Roth IRA at age 15 when I got my first job. They set me up for success

Gen X here. I made very little compared to now. Paid for my own college. Had my own loans. It wasn’t that easy. We just had less and survived on basics. We weren’t “set up”. We were told to “figure it out”. And most of us did. We weren’t taught about investing by our parents. We learned it later. Some did and some didn’t. It is what it is.

My parents have $2000 set aside for retirement. They are hoping to pull loans off their life insurance. My older brother is on the spectrum and will never be able to live by himself, its too much for him to learn. Idk what they think will happen if they need full time elder care. They had it all and spent it all.

Boomer/Gen X? I’m Gen X…we never lived it up! Like what?? We worked multiple jobs since we were 16. My kids are entering college now which costs up to $100k per kid per year. We’re also caring for our parents (the boomers) now. Our lives have not been easy! Everything we’ve ever had we worked for little by little.🤯

Our 1993 interest rate for our home was 8%, a bit higher than today. Still paid it off in 9 years and funded Roth and brokerage accounts. We were frugal.

Boomers were promised they would taken care of by social security. The stock market was positioned to the well off not to the working class

Why do you ignore 100,000s of high paying jobs as plumbers, electricians, welders, HVAC Techs. Why do younger generations have such HUGE blindspots?

why are so many comments saying "he's wrong, I saved" obviously he's not talking about you he's talking about the people that didn't save anything but had every opportunity to.

Gen X and boomers are not the same. But also as a millennial in CA each generation has had a better opportunity than the last.

Wealth in a Minute :
The generational gap is real, but the spending side is still the one variable fully in our control. Earning wisely and investing consistently only work when lifestyle creep doesn't eat the difference first — that part hasn't changed in 40 years.

We had 401ks but you couldn’t just go open a Vanguard account. It was a lot more complicated so most people didn’t do that.

80s interest rates were high double digits. Gas crisis of the 70s. Countless recessions in the 80s & 90s. The banking crisis of 08. Stagnant wages & inflation. Where exactly were we supposed to extra to save? This romanticizing the past has become ridiculous.
