Every logging road cut into Malaysian rainforest is an invitation for trafficking networks. Deforestation doesn’t just take habitat from the Malayan tiger, it removes the natural barrier that kept it safe (Abidin et al., 2021). Malaysia’s illegal wildlife market has been rated 8 out of 10 on the Global Organized Crime Index, higher than illegal arms trafficking (Forest Trends, 2022). The chainsaw and the trap are part of the same economy. 🐅🇲🇾🐅🇲🇾🐅🇲🇾🐅 But people are fighting back! 🇲🇾🐅🇲🇾🐅🇲🇾🐅🇲🇾 WWF-Malaysia runs 15 patrol teams across Peninsular Malaysi, and every single member comes from the local Orang Asli Indigenous community (WWF-Malaysia, 2022). These are people who have lived within this forest for generations. Their knowledge of the land, its corridors and its rhythms is irreplaceable, and when paired with camera trapping technology, they are transforming tiger conservation on the ground. Since these Indigenous patrol teams were established in 2018, snares in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex have been reduced by 98% (WWF-UK, 2023). This is such a vital conservation strategy, as their knowlage is vital for hunting snares too. In 2023, the Royal Belum State Park became the first site in Southeast Asia to receive Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS) accreditation, globally recognised standard for tiger conservation excellence (WWF-Malaysia, 2022). The Malaysian government has also launched Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah and the Veteran-Orang Asli Community Rangers programme, specifically targeting deep-forest counter-poaching (Conserve Wild Cats, 2023). This is what ethical conservation looks like. Not outsiders arriving with solutions, but communities who have always protected this land being given the resources, the recognition and the authority to keep doing it. Support the petition. Support the people protecting the forest. Link in comment section along with the sources i used. 🐯 #MalayanTiger #OrangAsli #IndigenousRights #WWF #Conservation
