3N, you can imagine the other weight as just holding it in place

The measuring device only measures one side that’s why.

Isn't this like super obvious? Do people not know how scales work?

While I agree with the reasoning, I also believe you might get a different result from an analog scale instead of a digital scale?

you can put a 1000N weight on the other side and it would still read 3

moooni42 :
okay so if this wasn't answered already because I didn't read all the comments the scale only reads one side because the other side is just an anchor you would need a scale that reads both sides it would be six

An old spring force meter (as in the original question) might give a different answer tho

But your scale is sitting on a wooden plank, whereas the one in the picture is hanging

I'm pretty sure you could make a scale that measures the pull on both ends and honestly the scale in the picture is symmetrical so it kind of does look like that (6)

I figured it would be because of the bend in the string. Half the force is pulling the cube down to the ground and the other half is pulling sideways on the scale

One side acts as the anchor and the other acts as the load so the scale measures the “load” which is 3

which weight is causing the pressure and which is holding the scale 🤣😅

now do this with torsion to explain to people why an extension does NOT effect torque and the displayed reading. an action REQUIRES an equal and opposite reaction.

It should be obvious if u think about it. When u hang the scale to weigh something it doesnt add in the weight of whatever u hang it from. So that 3N weight on the right might as well be a hook hung from a ceiling

i said 3 but because its on a pully halving the load so share would make 3. right answer wrong method

I assumed each pulley cuts the load in half. Making each side only 1.5N rather than 3N. So then 1.5+1.5 =3

It’s because it only measures 1 side anyway, so it only measures one string
