@retroboomeruk: Written, composed, and produced by George Michael for Wham! in 1984, "Last Christmas" is a synth-pop holiday staple built around a bittersweet tale of unrequited love. Key Highlights The Theme: Despite its festive setting, the song centers on heart-break rather than Christmas cheer. It tells the story of someone who gave their heart away the previous Christmas, only to have it rejected, and resolves to give it to someone special this year to avoid the pain. Solo Craftsmanship: George Michael single-handedly wrote, produced, and played every instrument on the original track—including the synthesizer, drum machine, and sleigh bells—in London's Advision Studios. Chart Success: Released in December 1984, all royalties were donated to Ethiopian famine relief. Held off the top spot for decades by Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? (on which George Michael also sang), it held the record as the UK's best-selling single never to hit #1 until it finally reached #1 in January 2021. Iconic Video: Filmed at a Swiss ski resort in Saas-Fee, the cinematic music video features Wham! alongside friends navigating romantic tensions during a festive cabin trip. #wham #georgemichael #lastchristmas
