Someone said that if you liked Sun Qian in Early Spring, you should watch her in Love Song in Winter because she’s even better there. And honestly, I agree. . For me, the biggest difference is the storyline. . Early Spring is much more romance-driven, while Love Song in Winter actually gives you a mystery/crime storyline to follow. The romance is still there, but it isn’t the entire point of the drama. There’s a murder case, an eight-year-old mystery and an investigation that keeps the story moving. . And this is exactly why I think Johnny and Sun Qian work so well together. . Johnny is an actor who has always been very comfortable in crime, investigation and more complicated roles. Put him in a story where he gets to play a detective, and suddenly you’re utilising a side of his acting that romance dramas don’t always get to show. . Their chemistry also feels different because it’s not just about being cute or romantic. There’s history, unresolved feelings, suspicion and an actual mystery happening around them. So their relationship has more layers than just “the leads look good together”. . What’s even more interesting to me is that Love Song in Winter actually performed very well despite not having the kind of international exposure that Netflix could have given it. . The drama originally premiered on iQIYI, but when it later aired on Jiangsu TV, it still managed to pull 96.66 million viewers for its premiere, according to China’s official CVB data. . It also recorded 0.3287% ratings on January 13 and 0.3630% on January 20, with its reported peak reaching 0.3915%, making it the top-rated Jiangsu TV drama in that period. . That’s why I genuinely feel it had more international potential. . Imagine if a drama starring Johnny Huang and Sun Qian, with romance + mystery + crime, had also been picked up by Netflix and given that kind of global exposure. I honestly think it could have reached a much bigger audience internationally. . And the irony is that it was already doing well without Netflix. The problem wasn’t that the drama had nothing to offer. It’s that a lot of international viewers probably never even had the chance to discover it. . For me, Love Song in Winter is exactly the kind of drama that shows why Johnny shouldn’t be boxed into romance. . Give him crime, investigation, morally complicated characters and a proper storyline, then pair that with a strong female lead like Sun Qian and suddenly the chemistry becomes much more interesting. . That’s why I’ll always prefer a drama that gives the actors something substantial to play with, rather than one that relies solely on romantic chemistry. . johnnyhuang #huangjingyu #sunqian #lovesonginwinter
