@newyorkautomuseum: End of an era in NYC! 🛍️🏙️ Macy's The iconic red-and-white Macy’s shopping bag billboard at Herald Square which has towered over 34th Street and Broadway for over 60 years is officially coming down. ⭐️Why is it disappearing? The removal is part of a broader modernization and refresh project for the world’s flagship store. Interestingly, the giant bag was actually mounted on a historic 5-story “holdout” building (known as the Million Dollar Corner) that Macy’s famously built around over a century ago after a bitter real estate rivalry. With leasing updates and building changes, the famous facade is being stripped back, temporarily revealing the century-old brick architecture underneath for the first time in decades. ⭐️What’s next? While the exact details of what’s coming next are still under wraps, Macy’s and the building’s owners have indicated that a more modernized display and updated branding reflecting the future of the flagship store will eventually take its place. End of a legendary skyline chapter, but change is always the only constant in New York. Are you sad to see the giant shopping bag go, or excited for a fresh look?
