Riyanto: A Muslim Who Gave His Life to Save Christian Worshippers Riyanto was a 25-year-old Indonesian Muslim and a volunteer member of Banser, the youth wing of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2000, he was among the Muslim volunteers assigned to help secure Eben Haezer Church in Mojokerto, East Java, where hundreds of Christians were attending Christmas Eve Mass. At around 8:30 p.m., a suspicious black plastic bag was discovered near the church. Riyanto inspected the package and noticed electrical wires and sparks, realizing that it was a live bomb. Rather than fleeing to safety, Riyanto immediately warned the worshippers to get down. He grabbed the bomb and ran away from the crowded church toward a nearby drainage ditch, attempting to throw it away and minimize casualties. The bomb detonated in his arms before he could discard it, killing him instantly. The powerful blast destroyed nearby concrete structures, but Riyanto’s actions helped protect the hundreds of worshippers inside the church. His death occurred during a coordinated series of church bombings across several Indonesian cities that night, which killed 18 people. Riyanto is remembered in Indonesia as a powerful symbol of courage, religious tolerance, and humanity. His sacrifice was praised by former President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) as an example of human values transcending religious differences. A main street in Mojokerto was later named Jalan Riyanto, while his uniform is preserved at the NU Museum in Surabaya.
