She isn’t wrong. Christmas and birthday gifts should be whimsical and fun. If possible, helping with practical things should just be part of parenting a young adult. (In a perfect world, I know).

Main gifts are under $100 per person in our household, we each do up gift lists as suggestions to avoid waste and we do stockings filled with small stuff such as a chocolate orange, cosmetics, electronic accessories. Practical gifts dismay my husband but he's pretty happy with chocolates, rum and a book!

One year I asked for a car battery 😂 and a loft hatch and ladder….. best gifts ever haha 😂 I use the opportunity to ask for things that I don’t want to buy.

A gift guide should not be a shopping list you must go thru. It gives OPTIONS. You Pick some and done. The left overs could be options for grand parents or siblings.

give her a few years into adulthood and she'll be happy for the practical gifts. I didn't realize how expensive everything was until I was buying it myself. a basic printer is $50-$70 depending on when you buy it, food is incredibly expensive now.
