Well it’s either Steam adds “Temu” category and somehow separates AI-only made games, or they permanently ban them so that Steam is a walled garden for “Somehow Human”/“Authentic” games.

These new games about digging holes, picking hay, and organising a library are not bad games, they're just not unique enough to not be copied. It's a shame how many developers there are that steal from eachother today.
.
My point is basically this, if you make a game that has "more" to it than just a single main mechanic with a few other small ones, your game will not be copied, at least not in a few hours or weeks. If you have an intriguing story or world, nobody wants to make that. Most people I know barely have enough time to make their own stuff, why copy yours?
.
I feel awful for all the developers today who are affected by this, but the way games are made is changing, so to protect yourself you either make something that is hard to copy, or keep it hidden until you can release it. It's all really sad.

I’m not sure if it’s in next fest but a couple weeks ago played a demo for a pinball rogue-like called dungeon baller, i found it by watching a spiffing brit video. I think that for most new IP’s anymore i watch a video of it before, maybe not even a lot but if the premise sounds up my alley i might try it.

All valid concerns. I think devs who don’t know what to do should follow Zukowski’s wishlists and visibility masterclass. He at least gives a solid plan to get started. The main thing is making something that you’re passionate about that satisfies a niche and then email blasting content creators your demo and then later game keys at release. We also used Keymailer to help with this. I’m not sure how much social media helped us compared to that process, but people should try social media after their Steam page is up so there is a place to funnel them. Save Next Fest for the end once you have a lot of wishlists, Zukowski’s data shows it now works as a sort of multiplier instead of a launch pad, which I agree is kinda sad. I think the Steam algorithms still separate us from the mobile market. For now. Sorry to be another Zukowski minion, but he really helped us a lot haha. We started seeing a lot of low level content creators making videos of our game (Bookshop Simulator) and we found we were right that there was actually a small niche wanting that fantasy of operating a book store and it sold pretty well. The Steam algorithms took over from there. Hopefully you all do something more creative than that! -Alex

This reminds me of Amazon and big box when they started adding cheap junk online that flooded their inventory and you literally have to dig through pages to find a normal brand you used to buy from. It's horrible and doesn't make me want to engage with those platforms

It’s honestly insane. I’ve heard so much good about steam next fest, put my first game Squircle in it, alongside 8,000 other games 😳. The competition is insane from fellow non-AI or minimal AI (like Claude code I guess) using devs, to the full on AI slop devs with crazy AI art assets and AI music (I spent months learning Logic Pro and FL studio and Music theory 💀😂) 😅.

It's funny I see this video now. I checked the festival a few times over the few past days and I could find a single thing to even wishlist. My recommendations were of no use, only the interactive recommender helped - found one interesting game. I don't know how others do it.

As someone on the outside looking in, it's become a nightmare to try and filter through the ai stuff to get to human made games. Steam has dropped the ball by not allowing users to just filter them out. Even Pinterest has a soft "Don't show me ai" button. At least shovel ware had SOME effort put in. Ai games legit just poison the well.

How do I find anything these days? Curators!
Usually the pile checkers. Either the 6 games in 20min vids or the 30-60min one game quick looks.

Steam has always been the platform that "won" by never "doing" anything. (Of course they've done a lot especially with Steamworks) I'm mostly referring to the common saying. This is the first time I think they need to act, what's your take Chet?

I loved the Steam Next Fest, I remember raving to everyone that as would listen about how Balatro was gunna be the next big rougelike for 9 months waiting for it to come out. The only time I ever stream on twitch is to try out the next fest demos I’ve found for my friends to see. i saw you could let steam notify you when the current nextfest started and was trawling through the swamp of games for the first hour of it and yeah it’s a real bummer to see what it’s turned into

I've been attempting posting to reddit, bluesky, Tiktok. limited response. The right niche subreddit got a lot of positive comments, some clicks. I don't have a steam page currently but small amount of traffic on itch. Never been in nextfest but it's on my radar. Hard to decide when best to approach that. Can I ask: What are your thoughts on early access on steam? Subnautica 2 did amazingly well but historically early access seems frowned upon, and I know in some ways how and when you release to steam can sink the game. Not sure if going that route will ruin it for me.

ads can work great, but ads are very much a skillset of their own. its not the ads fault just like if you asked an ads manager to code your game and it doesnt work, thats not C++s fault.

Happy to recommend the sequel to Guns of Icarus, Stars of Icarus. This one’s in space with 6-DoF and some interesting takes on strategic team-based multiplayer. I’m heavily biased though, as we’ve been doing the audio for them.
