Definitely! I do feel like the more "vocational" parts of teaching are missing from the pgde! I appreciate theory is relevant but would love a bit more practical 'day in the life' aspects

I’m doing a SCITT course specialising in ages 3-7 and luckily we cover all these things and do lots and lots of phonics. I’ve found it really beneficial x

this is exactly what i have been trying to put into words… i started my first prac of my masters degree in teaching and was expected to run spelling and dictation for an hour and my god i’ve never been so overwhelmed in my life having to pronounce every little sound, i came home wanting to quit because i thought id failed and this was something i should’ve known and then i went back in my degree and not once was any of that covered but were expected to know it somehow well enough to teach small humans and be accessed on it 🤦♀️🤦♀️

highly recommend birmingham city university- i’m in second year of my primary ed course and chose to specialise in ages 3-7. we do a LOOOOT of phonics training, subject knowledge development, behaviour management, learning how to assess, looking in-depth at universal provision and SEND inclusion

We had literally NOTHING on phonics on the PGDE so the first time I taught it was when I was put in P1 from P5, about 7 years into my career 😂. I think it’s a bit mad that we don’t have a national progression and scheme for SSP and schools have to spend an actual fortune on resources like RWI.
