I have both the CPA and EA. The CPA is more rigorous and the path to becoming a CPA provides the practitioner with the advanced knowledge of accounting and auditing to become a better tax practitioner (for those who work in tax).

That didn’t answer the question. Tax wise, nothing more a cpa can do vs ea.

EA here, I’m the first to admit that CPA is more prestigious and more difficult exam, but at the end of the day it’s about helping people and making a comfortable living.

A CPA can do everything an EA can do. The reverse is not true. 🤔

I love being an EA. I own my own accounting practice and work mostly in the nonprofit/small business sector.

The MAIN thing that makes EA’s and CPA’s some of that both is a license to represent before the IRS. Totally 100% equal rights. But outside of that, it can get very subjective.

The craziest thing I think people forget is you don’t even need to be either to sign a tax return, just a PTIN, if I’m not mistaken. CPA and EA are just for practicing before the IRS. You can even have limited representation with some other IRS designation that escapes me right now. Anyways, I’m still chasing my CPA, passed three, lost credit for two, back to three passed. Next one scheduled in December. Perseverance my brothers!

I know many CPAs that don’t even want to sign off on audits for liability purposes 😅 I’m still debating if I should get the CPA at this point in my career. I’m running my own firm already and the only reason I want to get it because clients always assume you are a CPA lol I always have to explain the difference.

Not to mention EA license doesn’t require college or accounting degree. Just 18 years and older..

As to “prestigious”……. That’s only in the eye of the potential client😉

So the EA can do some audits like an IRS audit a financial review payroll compliance audit. And some other audits, but you know what EA can do that. A CPA doesn’t ever know how to do it tax strategy. The CPA doesn’t know anything really about taxes because the EA takes the tax exam at CPA does not.

and let's not forget that many CPAs dont do tax returns and for that reason many of them refer their clients to an EAs 😏

Just because you can pass an exam doesn’t mean you’re a good accountant 🫢
