@beyondcardboardmedia: 🚨 $13.26 MILLION IN CARDS… JUST TO PUT THEM IN DIGITAL REPACKS?! Remember those record-breaking NBA Debut Patch cards that sold for millions at Fanatics Collect? Well, now we know where three of them ended up. PrizePicks has acquired three massive cards: 🏀 Cooper Flagg — $8.04 MILLION 🏀 Dylan Harper — $2.88 MILLION 🏀 Kon Knueppel — $2.34 MILLION That’s $13.26 MILLION worth of basketball cards now being used as headline attractions for a DIGITAL REPACK BUSINESS! And this is where I think the hobby needs to start asking some serious questions. When these cards sold for millions, everybody celebrated the record prices. But how much of this market is being driven by actual collectors, and how much is being driven by companies that need expensive cards to promote their platforms? Think about that. An $8 million card isn’t necessarily being purchased because someone wants to add it to their personal collection. It’s being used to attract customers who will spend money chasing the possibility of pulling it. And here’s another question: If a company spends $13 million acquiring three cards, how much money does it expect customers to spend trying to win them? I’m not saying anything improper happened with these sales. But I am saying this is another example of the hobby moving further away from collecting and deeper into speculation, repacks, and gambling-like entertainment. At some point, we need to ask ourselves: Are these really collector-driven prices anymore? Or are corporations creating a market that ordinary collectors can’t compete in? I’ll stick to buying singles. 👇 What do you think? Is this good for the hobby, or are we heading in the wrong direction? BEYOND CARDBOARD Beyond the cards.
