I visited one of those churches in the 90s and the pastor showed me how you could pick up one of the floor tiles in the bathroom and it led to an underground tunnel that connection to the other churches and was used a part of the underground railroad.

I heard as a child that the center of the intersection was a gateway to hell and the churches were built there to keep it closed. 🤷♀️

Because of The Church of the Latter Day Saints and Joseph Smith left in the early 1800's which forced various denominations to choose to compete for presence, visibility, and congregants and built thier churches in the heart of the town.
