I’m always struck by the feeling that my life began long before I did. Whenever my aunts and uncles tell the story of how our family came to be, I’m reminded that so much of what I experience as ordinary was once something they could only hope for. I had the privilege of hearing those stories again when our family gathered to mourn the loss of my uncle, and in the presence of grief, they carried a different weight. I found myself thinking about how a family is shaped not only by the people who remain, but also by the people whose choices, sacrifices, and love continue to live quietly through the generations after them. Sometimes I roll my eyes when my dad reminds my sister and me how fortunate we are, perhaps because it is uncomfortable to be confronted with how little of our starting point we earned for ourselves, but deep down I know he is right. The life we were given was built through years of work, uncertainty, restraint, and sacrifice by people who accepted hardship in the hope that their children would have to carry less of it. Gratitude, then, cannot simply mean appreciating what I have; it must also mean understanding the responsibility that comes with having been given more. I hope to carry that principle into the life I build, so that my children and their children inherit not only greater security and opportunity, but also the humility to recognize whose shoulders they stand on. We all enter the world at different starting points, shaped by circumstances we never chose, and our lives might have unfolded entirely differently had we been born into another family, another country, or another set of struggles. Remembering that makes me slower to judge, because I cannot know what someone has survived, what they were never given, or who I might have become had I begun where they did. I never want to mistake privilege for personal superiority, or good fortune for proof of greater worth. I only want to remain grateful for the life that was made possible for me and worthy of the sacrifices that made it so. #Asian #Chinese #FirstGen #College #ImmigrantParents
