@curlcentric: Do braids help your hair grow? Braids don’t make your hair grow faster, but they can help you keep more of the length you grow. Your hair grows at its own rate, about a third to half an inch a month for most people. Braids may help with length retention because they give your hair a break from frequent detangling, friction, and other handling that can cause breakage. But braids installed the wrong way can cost you length instead. Tight braids can irritate your scalp and lead to traction alopecia, which is hair loss caused by repeated pulling. Wet hair is fragile and can break easily, so let it dry before you braid it, and don’t braid it tightly. Before you braid, wash and gently detangle your hair. Medium or thicker braids are usually a better choice because thicker sections handle the weight of the extension hair better. While your braids are in, keep your scalp clean, moisturize your own hair as needed, and wear a silk or satin scarf at night. And don’t leave your braids in too long. Styles like box braids should generally come down within six to eight weeks. Leaving them in longer can increase tangling and breakage during takedown.
