@alicesgardentoplate: 🦋🌱 Harvesting Butterfly Milkweed Seeds — Giving Back to Our Pollinators! 🌼🐝 Here at Alice’s Garden To Plate LLC, gardening is about more than growing food. It’s also about creating a healthy environment for our beautiful pollinators! 💚 One of my favorite native plants is Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa). Its stunning orange flowers brighten the garden while providing nectar for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. 🦋 Why Is Milkweed So Important? Milkweed is the only group of plants monarch butterfly caterpillars can eat! Without milkweed, monarchs cannot complete their life cycle. Butterfly milkweed is especially wonderful because it’s: 🌼 Native to Michigan and much of North America. 🐝 A valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. 🌱 Drought-tolerant once established, thanks to its deep taproot. 🦋 A host plant for monarch caterpillars. 🌱 When Should You Harvest the Seeds? Here in Southeast Michigan, Zone 6b, late summer through fall is generally the time to watch those seed pods! ✅ Wait until the pods turn tan or brown and begin to split naturally. ✅ The seeds should be mature, firm, and brown rather than pale or white. ✅ Harvest before the silky seeds scatter in the wind. Garden Tip: If a pod is beginning to split along its seam and the seeds inside are brown, it’s usually ready! 🍂 How to Store Your Seeds 1. Gently open the pods and separate the seeds from their silky fluff. 2. Allow the seeds to air-dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area. 3. Store in a labeled paper envelope with the variety and harvest year. 4. Keep in a cool, dry location. For longer storage, place fully dried seeds in an airtight container in the refrigerator. ❄️ Planning for Next Spring? Butterfly milkweed seeds benefit from approximately 30 days of cold, moist stratification to help improve germination. You can sow them outdoors in late fall and allow nature to do the work, or cold-stratify them in the refrigerator before spring planting! 💚 I love the idea of harvesting seeds from plants already thriving in our gardens and continuing their legacy year after year. And remember, you don’t have to harvest every seed pod! Leave some for nature to scatter and help establish future generations of native plants. A healthy garden isn’t just about what we harvest for ourselves, but also what we provide for the wildlife around us. 🦋🌻 🌿 Alice’s Garden To Plate LLC Garden Fresh Creations Made in Small Batches Without Compromise. #AlicesGardenToPlateLLC #GardenToPlate #ButterflyMilkweed #SaveTheMonarchs #NativePlants
