Higby :
First, you show our children on television…. teachers and staff are doing everything they can to help, entertain, and reassure them during an incredibly uncertain situation. Yet your reporting seems to focus less on explaining the differences in how schools responded and more on creating the impression that one school handled the situation incorrectly.
That is deeply disheartening.
Families, students, teachers, and staff have just endured an incredibly stressful day, not knowing exactly what was happening or whether everyone was safe. In the days that follow, staff will still be helping young children process what happened, answer their questions, and feel safe returning to school.
These are people who were making decisions in an unpredictable situation, with the safety of children as their priority. To then present the school that chose to evacuate as though it somehow did something wrong is unfair and irresponsible without the full context.
There is a meaningful difference between reporting on different approaches to school safety and framing one school’s decision in a way that makes its staff appear to be the villains. Our educators deserve thoughtful, balanced reporting, especially after a day like this. The focus should be on understanding the decisions that were made, not on creating a narrative that undermines the people who were trying to protect our children.
