@maddieunderwater: Final dive of 2025 🌊 A field note from La Jolla Shores We closed out the year underwater—where time slows and patterns become visible. Today’s dive was a snapshot of a healthy Southern California coastal ecosystem in winter transition. Bright garibaldi patrolled their rocky territories, a reminder of site fidelity and reef-based nesting behavior. California kelp bass and blacksmith moved through the water column, linking reef structure to open-water energy flow. Large sheepshead grazed invertebrates off the reef, quietly shaping community balance through their feeding. Along the sand, leopard sharks cruised calmly—seasonal visitors using these shallow, protected waters as aggregation habitat. Opaleye browsed algae along the edges, while lobsters tucked themselves deep into crevices, signaling the complexity and shelter value of intact reef structure. Above it all, the kelp forest and seagrass beds did what they do best: oxygen production, carbon sequestration, nursery habitat, and coastal protection—ecosystem services that don’t reset with the calendar, even if we do. A new year doesn’t begin with fireworks down there. It begins with continuity: the same cycles, the same relationships, quietly persisting. And we’re lucky enough to witness it—one dive at a time.
