The couple were convicted of murder in 1989 and sentenced to life in prison. But the case was far from over. Years later, an attorney reviewing the case uncovered hospital and autopsy photographs that had not been provided to the defense before trial. Those images revealed details that challenged the prosecution’s version of events. Medical experts examining the photographs concluded that April’s injuries were consistent with a dog attack. The severe wound on her leg, which had been treated as evidence of a knife attack, had also been altered during emergency surgery as doctors fought to save her life. Additional evidence, including canine DNA recovered from April’s clothing, supported the possibility that dogs had attacked her. In 1993, the convictions were overturned, and Debbie Loveless and John Miller were released from prison. The charges were dismissed in May 1994.
