@balancedmindsedu: Teachers carry a responsibility that goes far beyond academics. Thinking of the families and school communities grieving these heartbreaking losses. Educators, have you ever thought about what you might do in an emergency involving your students? How do you carry the weight of that responsibility?
Even as an Army veteran, I would not have known how I would have reacted if any of the drills we did became the real thing. I told my students I would die for them (8th graders), I told at least 3 principals that I had hung up my combat boots and had not come into teaching to be a soldier. I have argued with friends about why a veteran should be allowed to have a weapon in the classroom and why as a veteran I did not want to have a weapon in my classroom. I don’t think the those outside of the classroom get just how much teaching has become quite similar to being a soldier. No teacher should be responsible or even obligated to die for our students…instead our society should be more responsible and feel obligated to make sure all our schools are safe for our students. Personally, common sense to me but who am I? Retired from my passion because I didn’t need another “Honorable Discharge” 🙄🙄🙄

And we’re completely disrespected by the community and basically the world.
